Understanding Anal Glands in Pets

Anal glands, located just inside your pet’s anus, are small sacs that produce a smelly fluid used for marking territory. But sometimes, these glands can get blocked or infected, causing some issues.

Signs of Anal Gland Issues

  • Scooting: If your pet’s dragging their bottom across the floor, that’s a major clue that something’s wrong.
  • Excessive Licking: Licking or biting at their rear end can indicate discomfort.
  • Swelling or Redness: Look out for any swelling or redness around the anus.
  • Foul Odor: A fishy, unpleasant smell is a sign the glands might be infected.

Common Causes

  • Impaction: The fluid in the glands can get thick and sticky, causing a blockage.
  • Infection: Bacteria can infect the glands, leading to inflammation and abscesses.
  • Inflammation: Allergies or other issues can irritate the glands.
  • Parasites: Worms and other parasites can make the area more uncomfortable.

Prevention and Management

  • Regular Vet Check-Ups: Make sure your vet keeps an eye on and, if necessary, expresses the glands.
  • High-Fiber Diet: Helps make stools firmer, which can naturally express the glands.
  • Healthy Weight: Keeping your pet at a good weight helps reduce pressure on the glands.

When to See a Vet

Some pets need their anal glands manually expressed once or twice a year, often by a groomer. If your pet requires this more frequently, consult your vet to rule out underlying health issues. The right question isn’t actually when your dog needs their glands expressed, but whether they do.

Keeping an eye on your pet’s anal glands can make a big difference in their comfort and health. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your vet for personalised advice and treatment.
